What Causes Facial Wrinkles?
The appearance of frown lines, crow’s feet and laugh lines result from the movement of the muscles of facial expression which lie underneath the skin.  Over time, as the overactive facial muscles contract, the skin will fold and wrinkles develop.  Furthermore, the skin becomes less elastic with age, resulting in persistent and stubborn facial lines.

Botox® Cosmetic
Botox Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium.  When very small amounts of Botox Cosmetic are injected directly into the muscles of facial expression, the ability to contract these muscles is blocked.  Botox Cosmetic relaxes the muscles of facial expression and reduces the muscle activity that causes facial wrinkles to form over time.  By relaxing the wrinkle-causing muscles of the face, Botox Cosmetic creates a smoothed and improved appearance.

The Botox® Cosmetic Procedure
Botox Cosmetic treatment is customized for every patient, depending on his or her particular needs.  Treatment can be performed in areas involving the forehead, eye, mouth and neck regions.  No anesthesia is required since Botox Cosmetic injections are tiny and virtually painless.  The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, and there is no downtime afterward.

Post-Treatment Information
Following treatment with Botox Cosmetic, patients may experience localized tenderness, mild swelling, redness or slight bruising near the treatment sites.  These side effects resolve quickly and normal activities can be performed immediately.  Another possible side effect is temporary weakness of nearby muscles and in rare cases an eyelid may droop.  Since treatment with Botox Cosmetic is completely reversible, any side effect is only a temporary condition.  You will begin to see results within a few days and the esthetic effects of Botox Cosmetic will continue to improve for up to 2 weeks.  The esthetic results of Botox Cosmetic can last up to 4 months and with continued treatment, the effects of Botox Cosmetic may last even longer.

Safety and Satisfaction
Botox Cosmetic has been used safely and successfully for the treatment of facial wrinkles since it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2002.  It is approved in more than 75 countries worldwide.  Serious adverse events such as heart problems or allergic reactions are exceedingly rare.  The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation reported that 97% of patients were satisfied with the results of their Botox cosmetic treatment.

Cost
When considering facial esthetic options, treatment with Botox Cosmetic is quite affordable.  In fact, working mothers between the ages of 40 and 55 are the most common users of Botox Cosmetic.  At Metropolitan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Botox is priced at $12.50 per unit.  Botox Cosmetic is used to treat lines of the forehead, the crow’s feet, lines around the mouth, as well as vertical platysma bands of the neck.  Schedule a complimentary consultation today to determine the exact pricing for the areas you would like to have treated.
